Las técnicas de atención plena pueden proporcionar a los niños y adolescentes estrategias útiles para lidiar con una variedad de problemas de salud mental y desafíos de la vida que enfrentan, como depresión, ansiedad, acoso escolar, trastornos alimentarios, traumas y problemas de autoestima.

Con su experiencia de vida relativamente corta, los niños y adolescentes carecen de las habilidades para poner en perspectiva los eventos de la vida, las incomodidades, los desacuerdos y otros desafíos.

Es difícil para ellos ver cómo en un día/semana/mes/año esto puede no parecer tan significativo e incluso puede resultar bueno.

El mindfulness puede ayudar mucho a crear la distancia necesaria con nuestros pensamientos y emociones para poder procesar los acontecimientos de una forma más saludable.

Somos pensadores obsesivos (60.000 pensamientos al día de media) y nos apegamos y nos identificamos plenamente con cada pensamiento y sentimiento que surge en nuestro interior.

A pesar de que esos pensamientos y sentimientos son muy transitorios, y se mueven y cambian rápidamente, sin las habilidades de atención plena estamos totalmente consumidos por ellos, muchas veces hasta el punto en que podemos sentirnos impotentes.

Ser capaz de observar nuestros pensamientos y sentimientos e identificarlos, nos da el poder de liberarnos de ellos e incluso el poder de cambiarlos en ocasiones.

El conocimiento es poder. Cuando no conocemos nuestro mundo interior estamos controlados por todo lo que surge y cae dentro de él. Cuando estamos más familiarizados con él, podemos surfear más fácilmente sus olas.

Además, si no aprendemos a lidiar con el estrés de una manera saludable, terminaremos haciéndolo de formas poco saludables, como el abuso de sustancias u otras actividades dañinas o autolesivas.

Mindfulness es una herramienta sencilla para despertar la sabiduría que ya existe en tu interior. Es una forma de que te conviertas en tu mejor amigo y consejero.
